Hazardous Materials

What is AsbeStos?

Asbestos is one of the leading causes of airborne illnesses in schools, offices and other buildings nationwide. An estimated 20,000 people will die each year for the next 30 years from asbestos exposure. If tiny asbestos particles float in the air, especially during manufacturing 8”s renovation process, they may be inhaled, and can cause serious health problems. The most common diseases associated with asbestos exposure are:

  • Asbestosis – Is a restrictive lung disease that is caused by the scarring of the lung by asbestos fibers.
  • Mesothelioma – Is a form of cancer which affects the Mesothelium. Your Mesothelium is a membrane that covers your internal organs and allows your organs to easily glide by adjacent structures. Mesothelioma can cause your Mesothelium to grow beyond control, potentially damaging nearby organs.

Where is Asbestos Found?

Asbestos has been widely used due to its availability; low cost in mineral fibers, high tensile strength, and fire retardant characteristics and poor heat electrical conductivity. Due to these dynamic physical properties Asbestos has been commonly used in the following categories:

  • Thermal Insulation – Inhibits heat transfer and prevents condensation. Common uses are: Boiler Insulation, Pipe Insulation, and Duct Insulation & Gaskets.
  • Surfacing Materials – Used on surfaces for acoustical, fireproofing and decorative purposes. Common uses are: Sprayed-On Fireproofing, Plaster, Stucco, and Terrazzo.
  • Other Materials – Other, largely non-friable, products and materials. Common uses are: Floor Tile, Ceiling Tile, Roof Shingles, Textiles, Transit Boards, Exterior House Siding, and Roofing Felt.

If you suspect that your building has deteriorated and have reason to suspect that building materials contain Asbestos, it is imperative to have those materials tested for asbestos. For further information please call TS Environmental Services.
